Hyperlexia and Dyslexia in Autism: Hitting a Moving Target

The diagnostic histories of autism, dyslexia, and hyperlexia are complex. Because these conditions share both convergent and divergent properties, it is important to understand these relationships, especially in the case of research and how we interpret bodies of work which span decades of fluctuating criteria. It is also important to synthesize what we already know about the morphology of these conditions and pinpoint what we still don’t. Autism and dyslexia, for instance, share antipodal cerebral morphologies, such as minicolumnar density, neuropil width, cell size, corpus callosal volume, gyral complexity, gyral window size, and cerebral volume, while hyperlexia has not been studied in this fashion, although it shares much in common with autism. Meanwhile, the fluctuation in criteria of dyslexia

Neurodevelopmental Disorders Associated with Chromosome 15
Chromosome 15 is a focus of increasing interest to both psyc hiatry and neurology. Several neurodevelopmental disorders are geneticall y associated with this autosome, including Prader-Willi syndrome, Angelma n syndrome, Dyslexia, Autism, Hyperlexia, Ring 15 Chromosome syndrome, and Trisomy 15 syndrome. This report provides a review of the molecular biology of chromosome 15 and these associated...
متن کاملThe Neural Basis of Hyperlexic Reading An fMRI Case Study
Children with autism spectrum disorders in very rare cases display surprisingly advanced "hyperlexic" reading skills. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we studied the neural basis of this precocious reading ability in a 9-year-old hyperlexic boy who reads 6 years in advance of his age. During covert reading, he demonstrated greater activity in the left inferior frontal and sup...
متن کاملNeuropsychological profiles of children diagnosed as specific language impaired with and without hyperlexia.
This study compared the neuropsychological profiles of 46 children with Specific Language Impairment (SLI) and 16 children with SLI and Hyperlexia (SLI + H). The results indicated that the essential feature of Hyperlexia is Specific Language Impairment and not reading disability. Thus, Hyperlexia would be best conceptualized as a subgroup of Developmental Language Disorder rather than as a subg...
متن کاملHyperlexia in children with autism spectrum disorders.
We compared the reading-related skills of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders who have hyperlexia (ASD + HPL) with age-matched children with ASD without HPL (ASD - HPL) and with single-word reading-matched typically developing children (TYP). Children with ASD + HPL performed (1) better than did children with ASD - HPL on tasks of single-word reading and pseudoword decoding and (2) equivale...
متن کاملDevelopmental and acquired dyslexias.
Marshall (1984) highlighted potential parallels between children with developmental disorders of reading and adults who had acquired reading disorders. He advocated the use of a cognitive neuropsychological framework in the investigation of children with developmental abnormalities of cognition, including those with developmental dyslexias. Developmental phonological dyslexia has been extensive...
